Job Purpose

The Sheriff’s Department needs a motivated Assistant General Counsel to support the Department’s mission of public safety. This position plays a critical role in Magistrate’s Court by prosecuting cases, participating in preliminary hearings, and providing legal guidance to law enforcement personnel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages contested cases in Magistrate’s Court through appropriate resolution (trial, plea, diversion or dismissal)
  • Performs necessary related duties  
  • Ensures compliance with victims’ rights
  • Assists General Counsel as needed

Job Specifications and Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Two (2) years of criminal litigation experience preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Licensing & Certifications

  • South Carolina Bar Membership
  • Must have completed Rule 403 requirements
  • Valid Driver’s License

Knowledge of:

  • Criminal and civil law
  • Rules of court and courtroom procedures
  • Legal research methods
  • Modern office technology
