Legal, as part of Legal and Compliance in APAC to be based in Sydney, Australia.

 

Role

Jefferies is looking to hire an Assistant General Counsel for its Legal team in APAC with approximately 6 - 10 years PQE or equivalent experience in the practice of a leading international law firm or financial institution.  The candidate will be Australian qualified and have recent capital markets experience, including in public and private M&A and equities capital markets transactions.  Experience in a stock broking and/or funds management firm will also be beneficial. Reporting to Head of Legal, Australia, this is a diverse role requiring a solid understanding and working knowledge of Australian securities laws and equity capital markets practice, as well as the initiative and flexibility to learn and provide legal support and manage external counsel for the investment banking teams for Jefferies Australia primarily as well as other Jefferies offices across APAC.  We are looking for a confident and self-motivated candidate with excellent communication skills and the ability to hit the ground running.  This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-growing, high-paced business with exposure to a variety of corporate, transactional and regulatory matters across various markets in APAC. 

 

The candidate should:

  • Be comfortable dealing at a senior corporate level with a variety of investment banking transactions (including public and private M&A, private equity and equity capital markets); 
  • Have a working knowledge of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), ASX listing rules, and market practice for documenting capital markets transactions, including IPOs and secondary raisings; 
  • Have a working knowledge of current Australian regulatory regimes, including financial services and the AFSL regime;
  • Have excellent drafting, negotiating and communication skills;
  • Be prepared to be responsible for a wide variety of enquiries and matters and be able to juggle and prioritise work tasks;
  • Have a sound commercial head and an instinctive ability to get to the heart of issues as they present themselves; 
  • Be willing to learn to provide advice in a variety of practice areas across the Australian business, including general corporate and commercial, company secretarial and HR matters; 
  • Have experience and understand the workings of a financial institution; and
  • Be confident in providing training and advice to the business on best practice and current issues.
