Position Overview

Our vision for our new Compliance Counsel, North America is a fully integrated business partner who embodies our organization’s aptitude for innovation and believes that together we can do more to advance public health.

As a rapidly growing company an expanding footprint within North America, we are building a Legal department with the ability to scale to meet the needs of the company. This role, reporting to the Head of Legal and Compliance, North America—will serve as the lead Compliance Counsel and primary contracting attorney for the U.S and Canadian Compliance Program as well as support Medical, Commercial and Sales initiatives.

The Compliance Counsel will work cross-functionally with commercial, medical, and market access teams to ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, and relevant industry codes. This role will also provide exposure to vaccine commercialization and broader compliance initiatives globally.

In addition, the Compliance Counsel will support a range of legal and compliance matters, including reviewing marketing and sales materials in compliance with regulatory guidance and state law principles. The Compliance Counsel will be responsible for policy and procedure development, training and education, and auditing and monitoring activities in coordination with the Global Legal & Compliance team.

This position offers a meaningful path to expanded responsibility and influence as the compliance function continues to scale. While our US offices are based in Durham, North Carolina, there is an opportunity for this role to be based remotely within the United States for someone with availability for East Coast hours and occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist and lead the development, implementation and execution of the North American Compliance Program, including providing advice, developing policies, conducting training, monitoring and auditing activities
  • Develop strong business knowledge and collaborate with colleagues to deliver fair, well-constructed contracts that protect the company’s interests and achieve business objectives
  • Responsible for providing ongoing advice and support related to a wide variety of contracts, including the drafting, review, and negotiation of master service agreements and statements of work with vendors, healthcare professionals, healthcare payers, and others
  • Lead, anticipate, and drive solutions for a range of legal and business issues
  • Provide advice regarding commercial/business disputes related to contracts
  • Review, implement, communicate, enforce, and monitor contract process, Anti-Kickback Statute and healthcare laws and regulations compliance
  • Work closely with Head of Legal & Compliance, North America and outside counsel on relevant matters
  • Maintain efficiency and timely response to internal stakeholders, with a customer service mindset
  • Provide advice and counsel on a range of issues related to vaccines commercialization in North America, including commercial operations, advertising and promotional issues, distribution, state laws, pricing and contracting, corporate compliance and employment law, as requested
  • Conduct legal research as needed

Skills & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor from accredited universities and member in good standing with a state bar in the United States with eligibility for in-house practice
  • 2-4 years of experience developing and implementing a comprehensive compliance program for health care or pharmaceutical companies
  • Familiarity with drafting and negotiating all types of commercial agreements including advisor agreements, master services agreements, and statements of work
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information

Preferred Skills

  • 2-4 years of direct experience with health care and pharmaceutical law, including relevant legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex legislation and regulations
  • Team player capable of leading and participating within cross-functional project teams to meet key milestones under tight timelines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation styles to interact with diverse audiences, including outside attorneys, senior management, and business associates
  • Strong work ethic with the initiative to work independently
  • Detail oriented with a high level of accuracy in their work
