The Opportunity

Join the Future Fund as a Legal Counsel, supporting Australia’s sovereign wealth fund and a globally significant institutional investors as it executes complex investments and operates at scale across international markets. This role sits within the Legal team and plays a key part in enabling the organisation’s investment, operational and business activities through the provision of high quality, commercial legal advice. 

Working closely with senior lawyers and internal stakeholders, you will advise on a broad range of structured commercial transactions across public and private markets, including fund investments, co-investments, joint ventures, direct investments, restructures and disposals. You will help ensure the Future Fund’s activities are conducted in line with international best practice, within applicable legal and regulatory frameworks, and with a strong focus on managing risk while supporting commercial outcomes. 

This role is well suited to a lawyer who enjoys working at the intersection of law, investment and strategy, and who takes a practical, solutions focused approach to legal risk.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide timely, high quality and commercially focused legal advice to the organisation across investment, operational and business matters. 

  • Support the execution of public and private markets investment transactions, including structured investments, fund commitments, co-investments, joint ventures, direct investments, reconstructions and disposals. 

  • Coordinate and manage the legal aspects of transactions, including reviewing, drafting and negotiating transaction documentation and key commercial terms. 

  • Support and maintain elements of the organisation’s investment management agreements framework. 

  • Review, draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts, including consultancy, professional services and operational agreements. 

  • Work with senior members of the Legal team to identify, assess and manage legal risk in line with organisational risk appetites. 

  • Liaise with and manage external legal counsel and advisors in relation to transaction and advisory work. 

  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments relevant to the organisation’s activities and advise on implications as required. 

  • Ensure compliance with the Commonwealth Legal Services Directions, applicable laws, and internal policies, procedures and governance requirements. 

  • Contribute to internal legal training, knowledge sharing initiatives, and the development and maintenance of precedents, legal policies, procedures and guidance materials. 

  • Participate in projects or initiatives of strategic importance to the Legal team or the broader organisation. 

  • Work with senior members of the Legal team to develop and maintain effective relationships with external legal advisers and professional service providers, including supporting the management of legal fees and driving efficiency. 

  • Build strong, trusted working relationships with internal stakeholders across investment, operations, risk and enablement functions. 

  • Act as a collaborative and pragmatic legal partner, supporting business teams to achieve outcomes while appropriately managing legal risk. 

About You

  • A law degree from an Australian tertiary institution, or another legal qualification recognised for admission to legal practice in Australia. 

  • Admitted to practice as a solicitor in Victoria or another Australian State and eligible to hold a Victorian practising certificate. 

  • Ideally, 2-4 years post-qualification experience gained in a major commercial law firm and/or inhouse within a high-quality commercial or financial organisation. 

  • Exposure to funds management, investment structures or complex commercial transactions (including mergers and acquisitions) is highly desirable. 

  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to translate legal risk into clear, practical advice. 

  • Demonstrated experience identifying, assessing and managing legal risk in complex environments. 

  • Proven ability to build strong working relationships and operate effectively in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders. 

  • A solution focused mindset, with the ability to add value beyond pure legal analysis by understanding commercial and strategic objectives.
