What's the role?
Join a team of lawyers who support News’ editorial teams in telling the stories that matter. Reporting to the National Editorial Counsel, our team helps get news published in a safe and timely fashion, advising clients in every Australian jurisdiction. We also deal with complaints management and litigation, provide commercial advice, answer any and all legal questions arising from news reporting and provide training and support to News’ journalists.
Responsibilities:
Provide prepublication advice on a roster with the rest of the team covering 7am to 9:30pm Sydney time, 7 days a week. Yes, this role will include weekend work: if that’s not for you, please don’t apply
Assisting the Head of Litigation in direct instructing barristers around Australia or supervising matters run by external solicitors, including attending court when necessary
Advising about editorial commercial contracts and drafting amendments as required
Opposing non-publication and suppression applications including appearing in court or direct instructing barristers
Keeping on top of laws Australia-wide that impact publishing, maintaining internal resources and drafting and delivering training about legal developments journalists
Researching and advising on legal issues as required to support the editorial teams
Who are you?
A Bachelor of Laws or JD or equivalent
3 to 5 years PQE
Experience working for a legal practice which represents media defendants and/or a degree in media or journalism would be regarded highly
Previous experience giving prepublication advice would be regarded highly but is not essential
