The Opportunities:
This is a full-time, fixed-term role providing parental leave cover for a period of nine months. We are seeking a commercially astute Legal Counsel to deliver high-quality, pragmatic legal advice across AIA Australia’s business. The role requires the ability to manage competing priorities, work autonomously on day-to-day matters, and appropriately escalate complex, high-risk or novel issues to the Head of Legal.
The Legal Counsel will operate as a trusted business partner across a broad range of stakeholders, including Corporate, Finance, Procurement, Commercial and People and Culture teams. The role supports both ongoing business activities and strategic initiatives and projects as they arise.
To do this successfully you will:
• Deliver timely, pragmatic and commercially focused legal advice with minimal supervision, effectively managing legal and regulatory risk across the business, including within a life and health insurance regulatory environment.
• Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial and outsourcing agreements with confidence, balancing legal risk with commercial objectives and achieving practical outcomes for the business.
• Act as a trusted legal business partner and project lead, collaborating closely with senior stakeholders across Corporate, Finance, Procurement, Commercial and People and Culture teams to support both day to day operations and strategic initiatives.
• Demonstrate sound judgment, strong commercial awareness and clear decision making, with the ability to assess risk objectively while understanding business priorities and constraints.
• Communicate complex legal and regulatory concepts clearly and effectively, building strong relationships across geographically diverse stakeholders and contributing to continuous improvement through knowledge sharing, precedents and process enhancements.
Successful applications will demonstrate:
• Admission to practise as a solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction, supported by a law degree or equivalent qualification from an Australian or other common law jurisdiction.
• Between 4-7 years post‑qualification legal experience gained in a commercial legal environment, such as a leading law firm or an in‑house legal team within an organisation of comparable scale. In‑house experience is welcome but not essential where relevant skills and capabilities are demonstrated.
• Experience providing clear, practical legal advice to senior stakeholders, including support on procurement matters and data‑related issues such as privacy and data governance.
• Exposure to drafting, reviewing or advising on commercial and technology‑enabled contracts within a regulated environment, with the ability to identify and manage legal and regulatory risk.
• Knowledge or experience within a regulated financial services or health environment, with an understanding of how regulatory obligations influence business decision‑making and outcomes.
