About the role:

We are looking for a Legal Counsel with with experience practicing corporate and commercial law in an in-house legal department or law firm.  You will be a key member of a dynamic in-house legal team, working directly with colleagues to grow the business while ensuring the legal and regulatory risk is mitigated and managed.  Reporting to the Director, Legal, your responsibilities will include managing litigation, negotiating and drafting complex commercial agreements, as well as providing legal and strategic advice to the business units in respect of federal and provincial legislation relating to consumer and mortgage lending, banking, privacy, employment and consumer protection

Responsibilities:  

  • Providing strategic legal support to, amongst others, product owners, operations, human resources, risk, finance, marketing, technology and product development teams;
  • Drafting, negotiating and reviewing complex commercial contracts and related documents and leases to support Fairstone’s consumer lending products which include personal loans, credit cards retail point-of-sale financing, and auto lending
  • Serving as a main legal point of contact for business lines;
  • Advising business units on all aspects of federal and provincial laws and regulations, including consumer protection, consumer lending and privacy;
  • Accountable for assigned workload as well as other special projects that may arise from time to time;
  • Demonstrating strong judgement, analytical and problem-solving skills and capacity to synthesize complex issues and propose pragmatic solutions;

What we’re looking for:

  • Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws (LLB.) degree;
  • Licensed to practice law in Canada and a lawyer in good standing with a provincial law society (Quebec or Ontario bar membership preferred);
  • 3-5 years of corporate commercial experience in a law firm or in house legal department, preferably in the areas of banking, corporate or consumer finance;
  • Working knowledge and experience with Federal and Provincial consumer and mortgage lending, consumer protection, banking and finance and privacy laws preferred;
  • Experience with an OSFI regulated institution is an asset;
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills;
  • Ability to analyze statutes and regulations, determine their impact on the business and propose practical solutions;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; 
  • Fully bilingual (English and French), written and spoken is an asset;
  • Ability to work well with others in the legal department and in the business;
  • Highly motivated, energetic and enthusiastic self-starter;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;

What you can expect - pay & process:

  • Expected base salary range is 90,000$ - 115,000$ plus the opportunity to earn an annual incentive bonus tied to performance.
