People are living longer and we’re excited by the opportunities this brings to help people live their best lives. We’re here for everyone who wants to make the most of their time on the planet and leave it a little better than they found it – however grand or humble their ambitions.
We help people live their best lives. We help them with the big stuff, for the moments that matter: Pensions, Savings, Investments. At Aegon, we strive in creating a diverse organisation that plays a meaningful role in driving greater equity, inclusion and belonging.
We’re looking for a proactive and commercially minded Legal Counsel to join our team. In this role, you’ll play a key part in helping the Group achieve its business aims by providing high‑quality legal and technical advice across a wide range of commercial matters. You will also have the opportunity to further develop your skills as part of a high performing and supportive team.
You’ll work closely with stakeholders at all levels offering guidance that supports effective decision-making and ensures the Group meets relevant regulatory and contractual requirements. You’ll draft, review, and negotiate a broad suite of commercial agreements, always bringing a solution‑focused, risk‑aware approach.
You’ll also act as a key liaison with external advisers when needed and contribute to ongoing team and departmental development initiatives. Strong relationship-building, clear communication, and the ability to translate complex matters into practical recommendations will be essential to your success.
Key Responsibilities include:
Provide legal and technical advice on commercial matters across the Group, including drafting and negotiating contracts.
Work collaboratively with stakeholders up to senior leadership level, supporting informed commercial decision-making.
Ensure the Group’s contractual documentation remains accurate, consistent, and fit for purpose.
Liaise with external legal advisers where appropriate to support business aims.
Support team and departmental initiatives, including process and document development.
Contribute to broader commercial projects as necessary, including arrangements with funds, restructurings, and corporate activity.
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
A qualification as a solicitor or advocate/barrister in Scotland and/or England.
Knowledge of commercial contracts, particularly IT related and associated regulatory requirements.
Strong ability to communicate complex legal and technical concepts clearly and confidently to all levels of the business.
Experience conducting complex research and applying insights to specific business needs.
Sound judgement when advising on multifaceted issues using multiple sources of information.
Ability to manage your own work with strong planning and prioritisation skills.
Experience within financial services — in-house or in private practice.
What’s in it for you?
We’re serious about your future and our enhanced pension scheme is now in place. We ask you to contribute 3% of your salary to your pension and we’ll put in 9%. If you decide to contribute more, we’ll match it up to a combined total of 20% of your salary (that’s 7% from you and 13% from us).
A discretionary bonus, depending on personal and company performance.
36 days leave per year (including bank holidays, pro-rated for part-time).
We also offer private medical cover, life assurance, critical illness cover, enhanced parental leave and a variety of lifestyle benefits to help our employees live their best lives, including retail discount vouchers, cycle2work scheme, subsidised restaurant and online GP appointments.
