Legal Counsel (Litigation) – Africa & Middle East (AME)

Position Overview

Barrick Mining Corporation is seeking a mid-level Legal Counsel to join the Africa & Middle East (AME) Regional Legal team. The role will primarily support litigation and dispute resolution matters across the region, with a key focus on Tanzania.

The successful candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders and external counsel to manage legal risks, support ongoing disputes, and contribute to the development of legal strategies aligned with the company’s operational and commercial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

•    Provide legal support on litigation and dispute resolution matters across the AME region, with a primary focus on Tanzania.

•    Assist in managing ongoing litigation, arbitration matters, including pre-dispute stages (negotiation, mediation etc.) and coordination with external counsel.

•    Support the development and execution of litigation strategies in alignment with business objectives.

•    Review, draft, and advise on legal documentation related to disputes, settlements, and claims.

•    Provide legal advice to the mine sites and AME management.

•    Monitor legal and regulatory developments in relevant jurisdictions and assess potential impacts on the business.

•    Support internal investigations and fact-finding exercises where required.

•    Assist in managing relationships with external law firms, including oversight of performance and legal spend.

•    Collaborate with cross-functional teams (operations, HR, finance, compliance) to proactively manage legal risk.

•    Contribute to the development of internal policies, procedures, and training related to litigation and dispute management.

Qualification Requirements

•    Qualified Lawyer with admission in a recognized common law jurisdiction.

Experience and Skills Requirements

•    Minimum of 5 years’ post-qualification experience, with a strong focus on litigation and dispute resolution.

•    Experience working in or supporting emerging markets, preferably within Africa or the Middle East is a plus.

•    Prior experience in the mining, natural resources, or energy sector is a plus.

•    Experience managing external (local) counsel and working across multiple jurisdictions.

•    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice.

•    Excellent drafting and communication skills.

•    Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously and work under pressure.

•    High level of integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment.

•    Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.

•    Ability to work independently as well as part of a global team.

•    Willingness to travel occasionally within the AME region as required.

•    Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a multicultural and dynamic environment.
