Your New Role and Responsibilities

We are seeking a Legal Counsel / Senior Legal Counsel to join our Legal & Trade Office team, reporting to the Australian General Counsel. This role will provide commercially focused legal support across a broad range of matters, partnering closely with stakeholders to enable business outcomes while managing legal risk.

As a trusted advisor, you will work alongside business leaders and client delivery program teams, helping shape decisions through clear, considered advice and influence rather than directive authority. You will be expected to bring a measured commercial lens to your work  understanding the broader business context and balancing legal risk with practical, outcome-focused solutions.

The role operates in a dynamic environment where priorities evolve, and not all variables are always known. Success in this role will require the ability to navigate ambiguity, make sound judgements, and progress matters with pace and pragmatism.

You will support work across commercial contracting, corporate governance and compliance, contributing to the delivery of complex programs within a technology and engineering-led organisation.

This is an opportunity to work on meaningful, high-impact work of national significance within a purpose-driven environment. The role will suit a lawyer who is adaptable, pragmatic, collaborative and comfortable taking ownership in a fast-moving setting.

What You’ll Bring to Make an Impact

You are a commercially minded lawyer with approximately 5 to 10 years post-qualification experience, with a solid foundation in commercial or corporate law.

You may have developed your experience within a law firm, in-house, or a combination of both.

You will bring:

  • Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements

  • A strong commercial mindset, with the ability to understand business drivers and provide advice that supports decision-making

  • The ability to influence outcomes through credibility, judgement and collaboration.

  • Confidence operating in ambiguous and evolving environments, with the ability to make decisions and move matters forward

  • A pragmatic approach; comfortable progressing work and delivering outcomes without needing every detail to be fully resolved

  • Adaptability, with the ability to respond to changing priorities and business needs

  • Exposure to corporate governance and compliance frameworks

  • The ability to manage competing priorities and operate with a high degree of autonomy

Experience within engineering, technology, defence, or program-based environments will be highly regarded, though not essential.

You are someone who builds trust quickly, communicates with clarity, and takes ownership of outcomes; bringing a balanced, solutions-focused approach to complex legal and commercial challenges.

The role will be based in either Melbourne or Canberra. A typical week will involve in office work on two days and the remainder from home.

Don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes – if you meet most of them, we encourage you to submit your application We’re most interested in your strengths, what you want to learn and how far you want to go.

This role does require the successful applicant to be an Australian Citizen.
