Job Description:
In 2025, we established a new Legal Solutions Team (“LST”) with the aim of providing defined, structured shared legal services to the bp business.
The LST is primarily located in Kuala Lumpur (KL) as well as Budapest. Locations which are also home to wider bp BTC (Business & Technology Centres) teams, that help power bp’s strategy through world class business operations enabled by technology and innovation. The LST aims to benefit from local talent - creating opportunity to develop an integral part of the next generation of bp legal capability. We are actively exploring the creation of a further LST location.
The LST is an integral part of the Legal function and core to the creation of the new Legal & E&C Solutions & Innovation team. The team is currently comprised of six members who provide contracting legal support to bp’s Procurement function. They support staff in Sunbury, Houston, Budapest, KL and other global locations.
We are actively recruiting further team members to enable an expanded team to handle a broader variety of work across a number of work streams including commercial oil & gas, marketing & convenience and corporate activities.
The implementation of the LST has already helped us successfully improve the way we deliver legal services, with more agility and efficiency, in a data-driven, technology-enabled environment. This new role is an opportunity to lead that expanding team help drive a key element of bp’s modernisation agenda.
What you will do...
- Report to SVP legal & E&C Solutions & Innovation and participate on the Legal & E&C Solutions & Innovation leadership team. You will play a key role in both the development, expansion and advancement of the LST and the broader Solutions & Innovation sub-entity.
- Lead and develop a group of lawyers in KL, Budapest and potentially a further location, creating a high performance, inclusive team and a psychologically safe environment with a culture of integrity, openness and continuous improvement.
- Directly and via support of the team, develop and implement effective legal strategies and advice / influence to handle the issues and matters within the LST’s scope.
- Lead the expansion of the LST, analysing and developing the intake of new work, creating appropriate processes and workflows, optimising the use of data and technology, considering location strategy and being responsible for recruitment.
- Continually drive the team’s efficiency and effectiveness, using its capabilities and supporting its continued impact within the function and business.
- Be willing to challenge existing ways of working whilst also working collaboratively across Legal and the business in the pursuit of these responsibilities.
- Continually seek to innovate, including the LST’s processes and policies, use of technology and digital and ability to generate valuable data insights.
- Role model leadership across the legal function and beyond, setting strategic direction / priorities for themselves and others and acting as a speak-up channel.
- Work with a wide range of lawyers as well as Legal Operations, Legal Innovation teams and colleagues from Finance, Procurement, Technology and other business areas.
What you will bring...
- Extensive experience of providing legal support to a broad range of commercial matters including material transactions and negotiations, complex procurement and project activities, contentious scenarios and regulatory issues.
- Strong technical legal and business skills, combined with an ability to take a strategic, pragmatic and commercial view of the challenges and issues facing bp.
- Experience leading, developing and motivating high‑performing teams, creating a positive environment that balances performance and wellbeing. Holds teams to account for delivery, behaviours, priorities and performance providing oversight and assurance.
- Strong emotional intelligence, listening actively to diverse perspectives and working in a highly collaborative manner across geographies and cultures.
- Proven ability to move at pace and drive projects forward through uncertainty and complexity showing a bias for action and strong prioritisation skills.
- Experience of innovating ways of working, technology, process or otherwise.
- A demonstrable innovation attitude of experimentation, adaptability and continuous improvement.
- Excellent communication skills (applying a good balance of listening and questioning skills) to understand different perspectives, build relationships with the business and as a leader of the team, receive and act on constructive feedback.
- Strong relationship management, communication and analytical skills.
- Excellent intuition for business, commercial awareness and risk judgement, making sound decisions on complex issues.
- Education and professional qualification to practice law in the UK or another relevant jurisdiction.
- Significant post qualification experience.
