The Legal and Group Secretariat team provides expert advice and assistance to the Group to achieve its strategic goals and priorities, including by identifying and appropriately managing legal and regulatory risks. 

The Regulatory Legal team provides strategic legal advice on significant regulatory and enforcement matters with ASIC, APRA and other regulators, including leading the Group’s responses to regulators on enforcement investigations and regulatory legal proceedings.

Do work that matters

The purpose of this role is to assist with leading a team of lawyers managing the Group’s responses to regulatory enforcement matters and to help achieve the Group’s regulatory engagement strategy through the provision of expert, risk-focussed legal advice and matter management.

On any given day, you will:

  • Lead the team in managing regulatory responses on significant regulatory matters
  • Lead the team in undertaking the legal analysis of issues arising from regulatory responses and advising on appropriate steps including risk mitigation
  • Manage regulatory litigation where enforcement proceedings are commenced, including review of all court documentation, evidence and preparation for legal proceedings
  • Manage external legal engagement on regulatory responses and regulatory legal proceedings
  • Support significant regulatory supervision projects such as onsite regulatory monitoring
  • Lead effective and thoughtful engagement with key stakeholders across the Group to provide proactive insights on regulatory enforcement and build awareness of regulatory risks 
  • Assist with managing Regulatory Legal reporting on relevant matters including internal reporting, due diligence queries and identifying emerging risks
  • Assist in co-ordinating and briefing independent legal representatives for relevant matters
  • Assist with leading, mentoring and developing the team’s Legal Counsel/Legal Associates 
  • Lead effective service delivery for significant regulatory responses through continuous improvement on planning, process design, communication and reporting

We’re interested in hearing from people who have

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law and admitted to practice in NSW or another State or Territory.
  • Proven people leadership experience
  • Deep experience and demonstrated capability as a senior lawyer in the financial services industry or commercial/regulatory litigator with experience of leading a team
  • Strong legal, regulatory and/or litigation experience, knowledge of risk management practices and customer remediation
  • Substantial knowledge and demonstrated experience in leading responses to complex regulatory and legal investigations and proceedings, and regulatory engagement across a large organisation
  • Inquisitive mindset with a bias to action around proactively identifying challenges and finding solutions
  • Excellent organisational, communication and program management skills
