The Senior Counsel, Head of IP Policy & Advocacy will lead the organization’s intellectual property strategy, shaping policy and advocacy initiatives to protect innovation while supporting global patient access. This role combines legal expertise with strategic leadership, driving engagement with policymakers, regulators, trade associations, and external stakeholders to influence IP legislation and guidance. The successful candidate will coordinate cross-functional teams, lead IP policy communications, and manage complex IP-related risks across multiple jurisdictions. This position also involves mentoring a team of IP attorneys, overseeing amicus activities, and serving as a public voice for the organization on IP matters. The role provides the opportunity to impact organizational strategy while navigating high-profile, global IP policy challenges. Remote work is supported, with preference for candidates on the East Coast.

Accountabilities:

    • Lead the development and execution of a cohesive IP policy and advocacy strategy to safeguard intellectual property and foster innovation
    • Engage with policymakers, regulators, trade associations, academic experts, and think tanks to influence legislation, rulemaking, and guidance on IP matters
    • Serve as the organization’s spokesperson on IP policy issues, including participation in panels, conferences, and publications
    • Coordinate cross-functional and cross-regional teams on advocacy efforts, licensing initiatives, and IP policy alignment
    • Oversee the IP Policy Team, providing guidance, mentorship, and strategic direction on patent prosecution, litigation, trademarks, biosimilars, and AI-related IP matters
    • Monitor emerging IP policy risks and opportunities, providing counsel to senior leadership and business partners
    • Manage amicus efforts and other legal advocacy activities supporting significant patent litigation
    • Requirements:
    • J.D. or LL.M. from an accredited law school, admitted to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction
    • Minimum of 4 years of experience practicing Intellectual Property law; 10+ years preferred
    • Strong background in patent prosecution or litigation, combined with IP policy experience
    • Experience engaging with trade organizations, patent associations, and policy stakeholders
    • Excellent analytic, legal drafting, oral, and written communication skills
    • Strong leadership and management abilities, with a client service focus and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
    • Ability to think creatively, develop practical solutions, and manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced environment
    • Preferred location on the East Coast, ideally Washington, DC
