Senior Legal Counsel

Summary

Our client, a premier management-side litigation firm, is seeking a Special Counsel to join its litigation practice. This is a senior, practice-focused role for a seasoned litigator whose core specialty is general liability and negligence defense, complemented by working knowledge of employment law and labor relations. The attorney will handle a substantial general liability and negligence caseload, including premises liability, bodily injury, and related tort matters on behalf of the firm's insured and EPLI-covered clients, while also supporting employment matters that range from administrative charges and EPLI claim response through single-plaintiff litigation and class and collective actions. The role calls for the professional acumen to serve as a trusted advisor to a sophisticated, management-side client base and to deliver the trusted results clients expect at every stage of a matter. The Special Counsel will work within a collegial, fully integrated practice group, carry meaningful client-facing responsibility, and contribute to the continued growth of the firm's litigation platform. The position is accompanied by an attractive, comprehensive benefits package.

Responsibilities

  • Manage general liability and negligence defense matters, including premises liability, bodily injury, property damage, and related tort claims, from inception through trial or resolution across federal and state courts, coordinating with carriers and adjusters throughout.
  • Handle the employment dimension of the firm's caseload, including administrative charge and EPLI claim response, single-plaintiff disputes, and class and collective actions.
  • Advise clients on labor relations and day-to-day employment matters, including discipline, termination, leaves of absence, accommodations, and wage-and-hour compliance.
  • Conduct motion practice, discovery, depositions, mediations, and arbitrations, and serve as trial or first-chair counsel as the matter requires.
  • Draft and review pleadings, dispositive motions, and settlement documentation, and supervise associates and support staff on active matters.
  • Serve as a primary client and carrier contact, delivering practical, business-oriented advice while contributing to client development, thought leadership, and practice group growth.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active bar admission in good standing in at least one jurisdiction; admission in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania is required.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years experience at a law firm.
  • A minimum of five years of substantive litigation experience with a demonstrated specialty in general liability and negligence defense, including motion practice, discovery, and courtroom or arbitration experience. Special Counsel candidates will typically bring greater seniority.
  • Working knowledge of and direct exposure to employment law and labor relations is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage matters independently and serve as a direct client and carrier advisor.

Equal Opportunity

Our client is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all employees and applicants. They do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
