ABOUT THE UFL


ABOUT THE ROLE

UFL is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to join its growing legal department. This role will serve as a key legal partner across the League’s business operations and will support a wide range of commercial, corporate, and operational legal matters.


Reporting to the EVP & General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel will work closely with senior leadership and cross-functional teams including business operations, football operations, media, marketing, and people operations.


The successful candidate will be eager and experienced, detail-oriented, and must specifically excel in high visibility, fast-paced, high-stress and “roll-up-your-sleeves” environments. He/She will have significant transactional/commercial contract experience at a law firm and will also have a proven track record of skillfully navigating deals and successfully negotiating on behalf of a company.


WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements including sponsorship, marketing, vendor, consulting, licensing, and partnership agreements

  • Support media, broadcast, and distribution arrangements

  • Assist with stadium, venue, and event-related agreements

  • Provide legal support for league marketing initiatives, promotions, and partnerships

  • Provide day-to-day legal support to internal stakeholders across the League

  • Collaborate with football operations and league leadership on operational matters as needed

  • Assist with employment and HR-related legal matters in coordination with the People Operations team

  • Assist with corporate governance matters and board-related documentation

  • Support league policies, compliance initiatives, and internal governance frameworks

  • Advise on risk management and contractual obligations across the organization

  • Assist in the management of legal processes, procedures and protocols for all functions of the organization. 

  • Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


WHAT YOU WILL BRING

The qualifications listed below represent the credentials necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.   • 8+ years of legal and business affairs experience with increasing levels of responsibility. At least 3+ years of law firm experience required with additional in-house experience preferred.

  • Extensive commercial transactional experience in a broad range of subject matters. 

  • Self-motivation and deal-savviness with demonstrated ability to take initiative and offer a high level of customer service.

  • Adept at working in a dynamic, fast-paced start-up environment.

  • Creative, business-friendly approach to problem solving.

  • Strong academic credentials from an ABA accredited law school and bar admission.

  • Excellent academic background. 

  • Experience practicing with a top tier law firm.  

  • Outstanding negotiating, drafting and proactive client-service/support skills, as well as a high level of comfort providing business-savvy legal counsel in an entrepreneurial environment. 

  • An organizationally sophisticated self-starter able to perform duties with minimal supervision.

  • Solution-oriented approach and philosophy, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment, outstanding interpersonal and analytical skills, exceptional organization and management reporting skills and the ability to handle multiple projects at one time.

  • Ability to collaborate proactively with multiple departments across the company and its multiple lines of business.

WORK LOCATION/HYBRID SCHEDULE

This position will initially be remote while the League completes the transition to its new corporate offices in White Plains, New York.

Following the office transition, this role will move to a flexible hybrid work schedule, with an expectation that this role will work in the White Plains office approximately two to three days per week, with the remainder of the time remote.

Candidates should therefore be located in, or willing to relocate to, the New York metropolitan area and be able to commute to White Plains on a regular basis once the hybrid schedule begins.

Please note that this role is not intended to be a permanently remote position, and in-office expectations may increase based on business and operational needs. The League reserves the right to modify work arrangements as appropriate.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Moderate Travel (10-20% travel): May be required to travel.  

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule inclusive of weekends, nights and holidays required.

  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is $200,000 - $230,000. This role is eligible for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits, including medical/dental/vision/life insurance, a 401(k) plan, unlimited PTO and offers a discretionary bonus. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
