The Role: OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Line) has formed a Risk & Compliance (R&C) department, which includes three specialized branches: Risk Management, Regulatory & Claims, and Legal. We are looking for a skilled attorney to play a key role in shaping and strengthening the Legal function for our North America operations.


This is a high‑visibility, strategic position where you will advise leadership, influence corporate decision‑making, and partner with both U.S. teams and our global headquarters in Hong Kong. If you enjoy complex commercial work, regulatory challenges, and cross‑border collaboration, this role offers an exciting blend of all three.


Experience with FMC (Federal Maritime Commission) regulations or maritime matters is a plus — but not required. Our North America Group (NAG) leader will provide support in these areas.


Summary of Responsibilities:

 

Commercial Contracts

    • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts, including service agreements and vendor/supplier contracts
    • Lead customer boilerplate reviews and negotiations

Legal & Compliance

    • Serve as a trusted advisor to OOCL North America Group companies
    • Guide management on compliance with maritime and government regulations
    • Liaise with FMC (Federal Maritime Commission) and CBP (Customs & Border Protection) for C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) certification, including ongoing communication with regulators
    • Partner with external counsel on litigation and coordinate with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong as needed
    • Represent OOCL in legal proceedings, including court cases and arbitration
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards

Risk Management & Issue Prevention

    • Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks across business operations
    • Evaluate legal claims and disputes and recommend resolution strategies

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active license in at least one US jurisdiction
  • Minimum of 4 years practicing law
  • Strong background in drafting and negotiating complex agreements
  • Experience with claims, dispute resolution, and regulatory enforcement
  • Strong understanding of corporate law and regulatory frameworks
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently
  • Comfortable using legal technology and other tools

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with international conventions and treaties
  • Experience with federal and state regulations, maritime law, or global legal matters
