Lead the legal function of Australia’s leading renewable energy business

Hydro Tasmania is Australia’s leading renewable energy business and the largest generator of clean hydropower in the country. With over a century of innovation, stewardship and engineering excellence, we play a critical role in powering Tasmania and advancing Australia’s renewable energy transition.

About the Role

The General Counsel is the Corporation’s senior legal adviser, leading a high performing Legal Team and overseeing the effective management of all legal issues impacting the business. As a trusted partner to the Board, CEO and Executive Leadership Team, you will:

  • Deliver strategic, commercially focused and independent legal advice that supports business objectives while managing legal and reputational risk in a pragmatic, responsive and solutions focused way.

  • Develop a deep understanding of Hydro Tasmania’s legal and regulatory environment and oversee the provision of authoritative advice and guidance on the full spectrum of legal matters impacting the business including corporate and commercial law, major projects, construction, competition, employment, regulatory affairs, dispute resolution, governance and compliance.

  • Lead, mentor and develop an experienced in-house legal team, setting clear standards for quality, responsiveness and client service.

  • Oversee the effective engagement and management of external legal advisers to ensure high-quality, cost-effective and commercially aligned support.

  • Bring a commercial mindset and proactive strategic insight to complex and sensitive matters.

  • Be a highly respected and influential voice at Board and executive level, inspiring confidence and enabling robust decision making across the organisation.

About You

You are an accomplished senior legal professional with extensive experience in either corporate/commercial transactions, major projects and infrastructure, asset management, or regulatory environments. You also have demonstrated capability advising Boards, CEOs and senior executives in large, complex organisations. You are recognised for combining legal excellence with commercial pragmatism, strategic judgment and the ability to build confidence at the most senior levels of an organisation.

Exposure to the energy sector will be highly regarded. You will have:

  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to provide strategic, technically sound legal advice across a broad range of relevant legal disciplines.

  • Excellent ability to identify, assess and manage legal risk and balance this with commercial imperatives.

  • Outstanding negotiation and influencing skills, with the presence to engage confidently at all levels.

  • The credibility, judgment and interpersonal skills to quickly earn the confidence of the Board, executive leaders and key internal stakeholders.

  • A responsive and business-oriented approach, with the capacity to deliver clear, practical and timely advice in a dynamic operational environment.

  • Proven ability to lead and develop a high-performing legal team.

  • Ability to maintain strategic focus, prioritise effectively and manage significant workloads.

  • A proactive, values-led leadership approach, fostering professionalism, collaboration and service excellence.

  • Strong capability in managing external counsel for quality, delivery and budget outcomes.
