The Role

We are looking for a self-motivated, approachable, and business-savvy technology lawyer to join our in-house legal team to support Apryse’s growing business and team in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC). 

This is a highly visible, hands-on role with primary responsibility for legal support across the APAC region. The successful candidate will act as the go-to legal partner for regional business leaders and will have significant autonomy in managing matters, priorities, and stakeholder relationships, while collaborating closely with Apryse’s global legal team. 

The ideal candidate has experience working with software licensing transactions and intellectual property rights, learns quickly and is passionate about delivering exceptional legal work in an efficient and pragmatic manner. The candidate will play an important role in Apryse’s legal department and business, supporting our sales efforts, license management team and other day-to-day legal matters.
 
The role offers an opportunity to help shape and mature legal processes and practices in the APAC region as the business continues to scale, with exposure to complex commercial, IP, and cross-border issues in a fast-growing technology company.

This role will report into Apryse’s VP, Legal and join our global legal team consisting of lawyers and contract managers in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Location

The candidate must be based in Singapore.

Apryse is a flexible, remote friendly organization and supports a range of working arrangements. This role may be performed primarily remotely (from home), from our Singapore office, or through a hybrid approach, depending on the candidate’s preferences.

We maintain an office at Capital Tower, 168 Robinson Road, Level 12, Singapore, located in the heart of the CBD. The office is available to employees who value in person collaboration or prefer to work from the office on a regular or occasional basis.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary legal partner for APAC business teams, providing timely and pragmatic day-to-day legal advice and support.
  • Draft and negotiate software license agreements, reseller agreements, partner agreements and other commercial contracts.
  • Support Apryse’s IP protection and enforcement efforts, including supporting license management team with investigating and resolving suspected instances of misuse or infringement of our software.
  • Advocate for the interests of the business in commercial disputes and negotiations, which may include drafting demand letters and managing litigation with external counsel.
  • Work collaboratively with senior business leaders to implement and refine partnership and reseller programs to support business growth while managing legal risk
  • Work with legal and business stakeholders to develop and support processes for contracting and other legal matters to improve efficiency, scalability and productivity of sales process, including consideration and implementation of new technologies.
  • Develop and provide training for sales, license management and customer success team with respect to contracting and legal matters.
  • Support management of Singaporean entity corporate matters with external counsel.
  • Assist with privacy matters and other regulatory compliance efforts including sanctions and export compliance screening.

Requirements

  • Law degree from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant commercial legal experience (ideally in a major law firm and/or in-house at a software company).
  • An understanding of intellectual property rights issues related to software.
  • Experience working with software licensing agreements and technology-related transactions.
  • Experience with intellectual property protection and enforcement.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to understand the interplay of legal and business terms, and to advocate a strong position while maintaining a positive relationship with the other party.
  • Ability to grasp legal and business issues and provide tailored advice in plain language to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Creative problem-solver who can take a leadership role in transactions and resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and practical ways.
  • Proactive, service-oriented attitude, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build collaborative business relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Impeccable attention to detail, organized and able to self-motivate and work well independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.

Nice to haves:

  • Fluency in another Asian language.
  • Experience working with and supporting sales teams on time-sensitive, quarter-driven deal cycles and revenue targets.
  • Experience supporting IP compliance and protection efforts in APAC region.
  • Dispute resolution and litigation experience.
  • Experience negotiating agreements with government entities in APAC.
  • Familiarity with open source software.
  • Experience with privacy regulations.
  • Experience working with salesforce CRM.
