About the Role:

Our Commercial team provide support to our projects across the Construction lifecycle, and they rely heavily on the advice and support of our partner law firms. In this role reporting to our Senior Contract Manager, you will oversee our legal compliance and proceedings across the business, partnering directly with our Executive Leadership team, including the Director & CEO.

Our risk appetite and decision making will be led by our Senior Contracts Manager and General Manager. Your role is to inform those decisions through research, drafting and prioritisation. You will be trusted to manage processes independently, and have the support of our partner law firms when you need it.

As our dedicated Legal Counsel, you will provide leadership to our Junior Legal Counsel and will be given the opportunity to make this role your own. You will have the opportunity to effect change across the business and work on projects to improve our overall legal and risk approach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You'll orchestrate the management of our legal register, meticulously adhering to court and tribunal timelines to ensure our operations are always in sync with the legal landscape.
  • Tackle NCAT matters with finesse, including coordinating evidence, briefs and supporting materials.
  • Compile statements of claim for the relevant jurisdictional court.
  • Respond to statement of claims in the appropriate jurisdictional court, displaying your agility in legal proceedings.
  • Stay ahead of the curve by updating company-wide agreements to align with ever-changing legislation and evolving commercial requirements.
  • As a skilled mediator, you'll expertly compile deeds for the resolution of disputes, ensuring a fair and amicable resolution.
  • Undertake comprehensive contract reviews, including amended Australian standards, GC 21's, and other bespoke forms of contract.
  • Showcase your ability to align Growthbuilt agreements with head contract requirements, ensuring seamless pass-through conditions.
  • Compile Head Contract notices and Aide memoir at the commencement of contracts
  • Lend your expertise in assisting with the compilation of intricate legal notices, sometimes in complex legal scenarios
  • Act as Growthbuilt’s primary point of contact with panel law firms, providing briefings, cost control and strategic oversight of litigated matters
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Junior Legal Counsel, setting priorities, reviewing work, mentoring capability development, and ensuring high-quality legal outputs across the business.

About You:

We are flexible about the background you come from, but here is an idea of what might work:

  • Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Property qualification
  • 4-8 years PAE
  • Current Australian Practicing Certificate
  • Strong legal acumen and understanding of the construction industry
  • Experienced in litigation and dispute resolution across relevant jurisdictions
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities
  • Exposure to executive-level decision-making and strategic commercial risk matters.
