Role Overview:

The role to provide expert legal oversight on strategic data center development and expansion projects. You will play a critical role in managing legal risk across the project lifecycle, from site acquisition and permitting to construction and commercial operations.

This position requires a deep understanding of construction law, real estate, project financing, commercial contracting, and regulatory compliance in the infrastructure or data center industry.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Legal Management

  • Serve as the lead legal advisor for assigned data center development projects.
  • Provide proactive legal guidance throughout all phases of the project lifecycle—from land acquisition, design and construction, to commissioning and operation.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate EPC contracts, design-build agreements, equipment supply contracts, and service-level agreements.

Real Estate & Permitting

  • Support land acquisition efforts, including due diligence, title review, lease/purchase agreements, and zoning.
  • Coordinate legal input on permitting, environmental impact assessments, and local authority approvals.

Construction & Commercial Contracts

  • Negotiate construction-related agreements with general contractors, consultants, and subcontractors.
  • Ensure contracts are aligned with risk management policies, budget targets, and delivery timelines.

Regulatory & Compliance

  • Monitor and advise on legal and regulatory requirements at local, national, and international levels (e.g., building codes, energy laws, ESG frameworks).
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure full legal compliance across the project.

Stakeholder & Risk Management

  • Work closely with project managers, procurement, engineering, and finance teams to align legal strategy with business goals.
  • Identify, mitigate, and manage legal risks and disputes throughout project execution.

External Counsel & Vendor Management

  • Manage and coordinate external legal advisors, ensuring efficiency and cost control.
  • Participate in vendor due diligence, onboarding, and legal negotiations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal degree; admitted to practice law in [jurisdiction].
  • 8–12 years of legal experience, with a strong focus on infrastructure, construction, or real estate law.
  • Prior in-house or secondment experience in major capital or data center projects highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of FIDIC, NEC, or other construction contract models.
  • Experience in handling cross-functional legal matters in large-scale projects.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in renewable energy, sustainability law, or green infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with hyperscale data center development and industry-specific regulatory frameworks (e.g., energy usage, land use, data privacy).
  • Ability to work in high-pressure environments with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines.
